Last Fighter Standing Breaks the Mold

Last Fighter Standing Breaks the Mold

The thrill of the fighting championship rocked the Ticketpro Dome on 15 October 2016
Expectations were exceeded by far, minds were blown and the fighting action was next level at
Last Fighter Standing (LFS) which took place at the Ticketpro Dome in Joburg on Saturday. From
the phenomenal Vegas style opening ceremony right through to the left hooks and right upper
cuts, knock-outs and submission style wins, the caliber of sports and entertainment on show
was unlike anything ever seen before on South African shores.

LFS Spokesperson, Darius Jakovchuk: “What an incredible weekend of fighting. The skill the
fighters brought to the table was off the chain. The response from the audience, which
numbered over 5 000 has been nothing short of phenomenal. Having an incredible opening
ceremony and performances by SA’s best musicians like MiCasa really added the cherry on top.
We can’t wait for next year’s LFS, we’ll be making it even bigger and better!”

The winning fighters who get a slice of the prize money and prestige are:

• LFS Ladies Featherweight Division - Essiane "Junior" Clotilde, beat her worthy opponent
Bunmi Ojewole after going the complete 5 round distance - by points.
• LFS SA Men’s Lightweight Division - Ceeh Khobone, beat Alan Smith, who although the
youngest entry within the LFS Nationals showed great determination and willpower, by
points after also going the full 5 rounds of receiving serious punishment!
• LFS SA Welterweight Division - Keagan Wroots won against Gunter Ngunza by a
strategic arm lock submission.
• LFS SA Men’s Heavyweight Division - Thabani Mndebela, who was fighting Quinton
Rossouw, won by points – in a fight that was called “the best South African fight of the
century” by many of the great sporting enthusiasts present at the Dome.
• LFS 4 Nations Division - Danyo Ilunga (Germany) beat Peter Graham with an exciting
knock-out, after Danyo lost his fight against Alain Ngalani on points, but Alain could not
fight Peter Graham (who won Kristaps Zile from Russia) due to an injury which he
obtained within his fight against Danyo during the International pre-lims.
• The SA vs Russia exhibition Heavyweight Fight, between Danie van Heerden and Reinis
Porozovs was won by Danie van Heerden when he got Reinis into an impressive
submission, which is not seen often within Heavyweight fights.

The incredible SA Nationals, in 4 divisions, fought it out for their share of R1 million in prize
money and Last Fighters Standing 4 -Nations, was awarded a total of another R1 million in prize
money. This clearly ensured fighting at a new level of crowd pleasing entertainment where
fighters showed heart, honor, dedication, integrity and mind-blowing action from start to finish.
Another awesome element that set LFS apart and some would say, way ahead of the rest, is that
unlike in other fights or competitions, the Women’s Fights’ prizes are equal to men. A very much
overdue development and one that is most welcome.

The CEO of LFS, businessman and media entrepreneur Quinton van der Burgh combined the
awesome new LFS platform with a reality TV show and charity initiatives in partnership with
Generosity Water.

MO MAGIC

MO MAGIC

The Fringe at Joburg Theatre: Johannesburg, 20-23 Oct 2016
Having astonished, amazed and entertained a number of celebrities, personalities and
members of the public with his weekly prime time TV show titled “Magic with Mo” on SABC3,
South African magician Mo Magic has embarked on a nation wide theatre tour. With multiple
sold out performances across the country, the magician now brings the live show to
Johannesburg, for the first time.

A first of its kind for South Africa, the TV show gained a tremendous following from the viewing
public and rose to second most watched South African TV show on SABC3 behind Isidingo.
Additionally, the only international shows with larger viewerships were Bold and the Beautiful
and Days of our Lives, both on air for decades with a long standing following. The magician
says, I’m thrilled the TV show was so well received. South Africans are clearly appreciating the
art of magic and I’m honoured to be sharing it with them.”
The TVSA blog reported “Magic with Mo has pulled out an ace for SABC3 with a whopping
increase in viewership since its premiere” adding “Not an easy feat on a Saturday night. This
growth is a good example of a show slowly building by being engaging or entertaining. Well
done, Mo.”

An honours degree graduate in electronic engineering, Mo resigned from a lucrative career as a
project manager, in 2010, to pursue his passion for the art of magic. The magician says, “2015
brought with it the realisation of my dream - to share the art of magic with South Africans
regularly on TV, taking it to them in their homes. During 2016, I planned to take the art of
magic to people in their towns and cities to experience live.”

This being his 14th year with the art of magic, the audience can expect to see some of the
magic, mentalism (mind reading magic) and stunts as seen on the TV show, and other routines
saved especially for the 90 minute theatre show. He will also have you in stitches with his
clean comedy and witty ad-libs. The magician says, “I’m ecstatic that audiences across the
country are enjoying my theatre show and am excited to bring my show to Johannesburg. This
is the very first time I will perform my theatre show in the province.”

The brand ambassador for “Child Welfare Durban & District”, Mo Magic is also using the tour to
spread awareness into the contribution made by the organisation towards “giving childhood
back to children” and has combined a message with an illusion in the show to spread the news.
The magician’s ambitious nation wide tour makes history in that this is the first time a South
African magician will tour the country with a theatre show, combining magic, mentalism and
comedy. The show will then travel internationally. Tickets for “MO MAGIC” are available
through Webtickets and bookings are now open.

Official trailer released for Vir Die Voëls

Official trailer released for Vir Die Voëls

Huisgenoot, in association with kykNET Films, produced the romantic drama, Vir Die Voëls, as part of their centenary celebrations in 2016.

The official trailer was launched on Thursday,22 September 2016.

Click here to watch the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5uGD5mfsBM

Vir Die Voëls was inspired by the true story of Irma Humpel (Simoné Nortmann), a surly tomboy who ends up in a wedding dress, in front of the altar, with the boy who relentlessly teased her as a child. She has always believed that independence was the only form of freedom, until Sampie de Klerk (Francois Jacobs) came along and challenged her convictions on all levels.

“This is my first movie and it still feels surreal. Working with Quentin Krog and other experienced actors has definitely been one of the highlights of my career. This heartfelt story addresses universal themes and I know that the public will fall in love with Irma and Sampie,” says Simoné.

“It has been a great privilege to be part of such a huge project,” Francois says. “You seldom get the opportunity to ‘star’ in the era in which your parents grew up! I think Huisgenoot got a great team together to tell this story. It was an absolute pleasure working with such talented people. This must-see film will appeal to a broad audience – young and old. People, who grew up in that era, will be able to revisit the past . . . and youngsters will be able to experience how things were done back in the ‘old days’. The movie will take you on a rollercoaster ride of love, hurt, happiness, disappointment and humour.”

Vir Die Voëls is set in the late 1970s and will make you feel nostalgic. It’s a film about a strong, mature woman and an equally strong man who respects that woman enough to fight for her love. It’s a story about inner conflict and preventing external circumstances and emotional baggage from getting in the way of future happiness.

“I’m excited about the audience that will be watching this movie,” says Quentin Krog, director of the film. “I’m also excited about the idea of taking them back to another era; to make them laugh, cry and fall in love. To entertain them.”

Vir Die Voëls was produced, in associations with kykNET Films, by The Film Factory and the cast includes the likes of Elize Cawood, Nicola Hanekom, Neels van Jaarsveld, Drikus Volschenk, Leandry Smith, Liam Bosman, Lara Kinnear, Candice Kruger and Bennie Fourie. The movie will be released on 25 November 2016 and is distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.

ROBIN HOOD AND THE BABES IN THE WOOD

ROBIN HOOD AND THE BABES IN THE WOOD
A BRAND NEW PANTOMIME ADVENTURE FROM JANICE HONEYMAN

Riding through the royal forest of Sherwood on a glorious May morning, you don’t have a care in the world.  Then you hear a bird call, the faint rustling of trees, and suddenly a man armed with a longbow appears in your path.  He wears a feathered cap, or is that a hood?  You can’t see the man’s face clearly, but you don’t have to.  He is dressed in Lincoln green, the colour of Robin Hood – the most famous English outlaw of all time.

The earliest surviving Robin Hood ballad, Robin Hood and The Monk, dates from the 15th Century.  Subsequently, the legend has become one of the most popular movie and TV stories of all time: from Robin Hood and His Merry Men, a 1908 silent film; to British television’s long-running series The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-59); to 1973’s Walt Disney’s Robin Hood; to Mel Brooks’ hilarious Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993); and to the 2010 movie Robin Hood, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe.

And now comes Janice Honeyman’s brand new pantomime adventure, Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, on the stage of The Mandela at Joburg Theatre from November 5th to December 30th 2016.

The plot combines the babes-lost-in-the-forest story with the Robin Hood legend.  The young children, Hansel and Gretel, come to visit their uncle, the Sheriff of Nottingham, little suspecting that he is plotting their demise.  But never fear, help is at hand – in the shape of Robin and his Merry Men, plus Maid Marian and the Spirit of the Forest!

Playing the role of Robin in his first Joburg Theatre pantomime is Izak Davel, best known to TV viewers as Isidingo’s arrogant Bradley Haines, and whose hit recordings include Verlei MyIs Jy In Of Is Jy Uit and Vreesloos.
Much loved panto star Desmond Dube returns to Joburg Theatre to play the jovial Friar Tuck, Idols finalist Bongi Mthombeni features in his fifth Joburg Theatre pantomime as the dandy Will Scarlet and leading lady of South African musical theatre, Kate Normington, will surely be wildly comic as Silly Sylviana, the Spirit of the Forest!

Also featured in Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood are Graham Hopkins as the villainous Norman the Nasty, Sheriff of Nottingham, L J Urbani as the ever-popular panto Dame Emmarentia Ugly, Phumi Mncayi as chief lieutenant of the Merry Men, Little John, award-winning actress Candida Mosoma as Much the Miller’s Son (written with an inevitable panto twist!), beautiful Carmen Pretorius as Robin’s love interest, Maid Marian, and Jaco Van Rensburg as the wandering minstrel, Alan-a-Dale.

Joining them in the all-South-African cast are, in alphabetical order, TeeKay Baloyi, Darius Engelbrecht, Clive Gilson, Nuritt Graff, Kyra Green, Dirk Joubert, Dolly Louw, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri, Tsepho Ncokoane, Noni Nkonto, Dale Scheepers, Natasha Van Der Merwe and Maryanne Van Eyssen.

“It’s an exciting year for us when Janice Honeyman writes a brand new pantomime script,” says Bernard Jay, Executive Producer of the panto. “We don’t know exactly what to expect until the last minute, but we do know it will be full of her magical flair for story-telling, spectacular special effects, zany comedy and outrageous double entendres!”

Writer / director Janice Honeyman collaborates with producer Bernard Jay on their sixteenth Joburg Theatre pantomime together.  Rowan Bakker joins the team this year as musical director; Nicol Sheraton returns as choreographer; the eagerly anticipated, over-the-top, fabulous sets and costumes are once again supplied by Qdos in the UK; the lighting design is by Graham McLusky; sound design by Trevor Peters; and Timothy Le Roux is the resident director.  As with many past successful pantomime productions at Joburg Theatre, Claire Pacariz and Simon James serve as associate producers.

Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood has preview performances on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre on November 5th and 6th with tickets from R170.  Its official Opening Night is scheduled for Sunday November 6th and the season continues until December 30th, with tickets priced from R220.

Over 30,000 tickets have already been sold for this year’s panto, so best to hurry and get yours now for South Africa’s most popular family entertainment tradition.  Tickets are available by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com or calling 0861 670 670, as well as through Webtickets and at Pick ‘n’ Pay stores. Why Last Fighter Standing kicks butt:

      Semi-finals: 3 x 2-minute rounds.

      Finals: determined by 5 x 2-minute rounds.

Fast-paced 2-minute rounds ensure that fighters deliver a more explosive performance with more KOs and more spectacular grappling.

10-second no-time-wasting rule to keep fighters pushing forward.

Equal opportunities and equal purse sizes for men and women.

Hexagon-shaped ring with no cage gives fans a 360-degree view of the action. Cameras mounted at every corner.

      No time-wasting rule.

A ground-and-pound limit of 20 seconds on the ground. Then fighters must get back to their feet.

The carefully defined rules of LFS draw on the history and complexity of martial arts and how they have evolved across the world. The rules provide fighters from all fighting styles, from single-discipline pugilists to combination fighters, with an equal platform and the opportunity to showcase their combat skills, style and stamina.
