The Neon Run JHB 2017: The line-up for Jozi’s most exhilarating race and music festival combo has been announced

One of the best things about SAs most dazzling race, The Neon Run, is that the fun doesnt stop after participants have made their way across the finish line. After the race, the night will ignite with a fabulous music festival to keep the vibe going strong. The next event in Jozi, which is happening on the 2nd of September 2017 at St Stithians College not only promises a new, contained 5km course with epic activations along the route, but also a sizzling line-up of some of SAs hottest acts to keep attendees dancing into the night. Plus, dont forget that this family-friendly run can be done at a walk, a run, on skates, on a bicycle or even at a hop, skip and a jump. All that matters is that absolutely everybody has an electric time at this unique event.

The acts confirmed for the music festival are a blend of the funkiest and most fabulous local talent around. This includes 5FMs cool kid on the block, DJ Nick Hamman, who is also an accomplished musician and producer. He has performed at many music festivals, and his sets are eclectic and genre-defying. Mysterious trio Strange Loving Featuring Apple Gule will also be performing. Their edgy sound is influenced by disco through to deep house and their secretive vibe simply adds to their allure. The deliciously fresh breakout act Monark will be delivering a rich and polished pop performance to dance along to, while DJ Abby Nurock will be bringing musical therapy in the form of old and new-school infectious dance grooves and majestic beats. For jazzy, groovy & uplifting house music, live electronic act The Kiffness will be taking the stage and another favourite, Kyle Cassim, will be keeping crowds entertained with his passionate, high energy set.

Tavis Brown, Special Events Director of Oomph-Africa, is confident that there is something to entertain everyone attending: We have confirmed a line-up that crackles with all the energy and excitement that people associate with the race. The Neon Run isnt just about getting over the finish line its about enjoying the entire experience and glowing from start to end!

SilvaSale Events and Catering Open Day Review

Welcomed by Hawaiian dancers, I arrived at this exclusive event to experience the events and venue first hand that both SilvaSale and Wanderers had to offer. It all started in the parking areas where music was playing and dancers were at the edge of the red carpet welcoming us all to the event, with VIP signs, tables to enter competitions and a Schweppes drink stand where we received a welcome appetizer.

Walking through the luscious gardens of Wanderers Sports Club, I was feeling excited and calm at the same time. The gardens are so beautiful and have a send of tranquillity to it. We received our names tags, which were so professionally done, (they were hard, credit card like plastic, with our names on). We were then welcomed by friendly staff, as we walked to the gardens where there was food, entertainment and beauty. The theme here was “Mexico”, they had Mexican themed food, such as Tacos, Quesadillas, beef skewers, and much more. There was a Mexican themed singer who was dressed to the nines and a face painter to add a bit of fun. There was dancers there to entertain us during parts of that leg of the event, which was amazing to watch, there was a traditional Mexican dance as well as a sensual Tango dance that was fantastic.

The best part of this section for me was the Bacardi Stand. It was done so nicely. They were offering tasters, and later gave the guests Gin and Tonic to refresh the pallets. The stand reminded me of a rustic turned modern look that also represented class and sophistication, however was young and inventive. They also had a man dressed in a suit, looking as if he had just walked out of the “Great Gatsby”, in the best possible way obviously. He was educating us on the brand, the alcohol and the bottles. It was stunning and a great addition to the event. The Gin was also divine and I normally struggle to drink Gin.

We then moved on upstairs to be welcomed by Mojitos and a Bollywood/Indian dance. The roof was draped stunningly, vibrant colours and sound filled the great hallway. After the dancers were done, we were directed into the ballroom, which was set up in cinema style, ready for a short show and gift giveaways. The lighting in that room was amazing and unlike anything I have seen before, it was done and put together with Upstage. Morgan Beatbox was our MC for this leg of the event, he was really funny and entertaining. He said he felt like Oprah and said we should all look under our seats, I found a lovely bottle of wine under my seat, and the select few received the same or a power bank. Great prizes and totally unexpected. We were then fortunate to get a show from Morgan Beatbox, who is absolutely amazing and it’s unbelievable to watch him do what he does. We were then surprised by some dances who seemed like there were causing commotion at first as a joke, which was great then danced for us, a hip hop number to be exact. All the entertainment was supplied by Pink Angel Productions, and man did they deliver. Upon exiting the ball room, there was a ballerina who was all lit up escorting us out, with a violist playing us out, but what was amazing was that her bow was it us as well. It was amazing and a bit emotional in the best way, if I am being honest.

We then went to the last phase which was upstairs, it had an inside, balcony and a smaller balcony just below the top balcony. It was amazing. There was dessert there along with more casual but classy food such as biscuits, salmon, seas food treats and much more. We went down to the smaller balcony where there was a Craft Beer stand. I am not a beer drinker but I wanted to take full advantage of every experience, so I went over to the stand, where I was greeted with friendliness. The RedRock Brewery had a great stand, a friendly promoter, a friendly sales manager. They were very informative, I loved the history behind the concept and behind their beers. They combine beer with good old rock, which I loved.  I really loved the one beer specifically called “Bad moon” and it tasted great. It tasted like beer but it was light and flavourful, and a hint of fruitiness to it. Plus I got super spoilt and got to take some home, which I was super excited about. I could write forever about them, but will hopefully do a full story on them alone, so I don’t want to give too much away at once.

Overall the event was great fantastic, the venue was amazing and the people from SilvaSale were phenomenal. There was truly little I could fault them on, so I am going to give an overall 5/5 BluBirds Rating. It was amazing!!! I hope to go to many more events here.

Take your dog on a Walk of Hope with The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk teams up with the Animal Anti-Cruelty League for the Walk of Hope – in aid of abused and neglected animals – on 5 August 2017. The community is called to bring along their beloved pets for a fun filled, 5 kilometre stroll from The Boardwalk. If you don’t have a pet to bring along, you can “adopt” an animal for the morning to enjoy the spirited meander. All proceeds raised through entry fees will be donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League in Port Elizabeth. The mass dog walk will start from The Boardwalk parking area at 09h00. The entry fee is R40 per person. The fun and festivities will continue throughout the morning with an array of food stalls as well as a children’s play area.

“Come down with your furry friend and enjoy a morning of outdoor activity for a good cause. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League does tremendous good work to protect, care for and rehabilitate animals that are neglected and abused. Just think, you can do something to improve the quality of life for a needy animal, and make your pet happy at the same time. Your medal won’t be shiny and bright. Instead it will be a feeling inside where you know you have done right,” says Siphokazi Ngombane, Public Relations & Promotions Manager at The Boardwalk.

Please note that all dogs must be on a leash to participate in the walk. People who would like to ‘adopt’ a dog to take for a walk can contact Amanda on 082 492 2744 for more information.

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco announced as Patron to Lifesaving South Africa

Lifesaving South Africa President Dylan Tommy confirmed the appointment of Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco as Patron of Lifesaving South Africa, at an event held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, in Umhlanga, Durban on Wednesday 26th July 2017.

“It is a great honour for me to be named Patron of Lifesaving South Africa, an organization that shares the same vision as my Foundation and one that I have always been inspired by. Lifesaving South Africa’s commitment to drowning prevention is remarkable and the spirit of volunteering that you are instilling in our young people is infectious,” said HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco (Formerly Charlene Wittstock).

The Princess discovered her passion for the water and dedicated 20 years of her life to become an Olympic swimmer, representing South Africa in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. “During those years, I learnt the importance of discipline, team spirit, dedication and respect for the water, oneself and others; values that I know LSA lifeguards appreciate and demonstrate every day,” continued the Princess.

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation was established in 2012 and has since reached over 300,000 people worldwide, with operations being established here in South Africa in 2013. The work of the Foundation is internationally acknowledged and celebrated for raising public awareness about the dangers of water, teaching children essential water safety skills and how to swim.

The partnership between the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa and Lifesaving South Africa will strengthen the promotion of water safety and support ‘learn to swim’ projects in South Africa.

Lifesaving South Africa’s Watersmart program is a classroom based educational water safety program developed to complement the current Grade 4 Life Skills curriculum. The program, presented by Lifesaving SA Watersmart facilitators will, during the course of 2017, be delivered free of charge to over 80 schools nationwide.

Mr. Gavin Varejes, President of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA, also announced the distribution of 200 rescue boards, valued in excess of R2mil from the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA to Lifesaving SA, with thanks to Cell C and Richmark Holdings. This will see every LSA affiliated lifesaving club in South Africa receiving rescue boards to continue their critical service to the community.

Varejes, synonymous for his generosity and support of the SA Surfing Legends and President of SA Rugby Legends, said “the new partnership will hopefully continue to encourage different sporting codes to work together and form the bonds, strengths and partnerships that make such a wonderful difference in our Country.”

“Cell C endorses this initiative in growing an awareness around water safety in South Africa and deems it a great privilege to be associated with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA”, says Doug Mattheus, Head of Marketing at Cell C.

Lifesaving South Africa President Dylan Tommy and SASCOC President Gideon Sam both expressed gratitude to HSH Princess Charlene and Mr. Varejes for their contribution to raising the profile of Lifesaving in South Africa, both on a social level and as a sport.
Dylan Tommy said “we are extremely grateful to HSH Princess Charlene for agreeing to serve as the Patron for Lifesaving South Africa. With the Princess as our Patron and the partnership we have established with The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA, we will be able to achieve far greater success in our fight against drowning in South Africa”.

In 2017, Continental Tyre SA, by way of its General Tire brand, committed to a three-year investment and sponsorship of Lifesaving SA, and its Product Communications Manager Ryan Visagie applauded the contributions of Varejes and corporate heavyweights Richmark and Cell C.

“It sends a great message to Corporate South Africa to get involved with saving lives. You can’t put a price on saving a life and it’s fantastic to see the investment in Lifesaving as a result of the partnership with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA,” said Ryan Visagie, Continental Tyre SA.

SASCOC president Gideon Sam said “it was noted that the Princess gives so much to the country she grew up in, but also so importantly to the serious issue of water safety and water education.” He described her as “an inspiration to the global community and a particularly special South African.”
