Auditions for 2017 GrandWest Open Mic Jazz singing competition start in August 2017


GrandWest proudly hosts the 9th annual GrandWest Open Mic Jazz singing competition this year. Auditions will take place at Jackson Hall, GrandWest from 9 August until 30 August 2017. Emerging jazz singers are invited to audition on Wednesdaynights from 20h00 and there is no cost to enter the competition.

 “GrandWest is pleased to support the Open Mic Jazz singing competition for the ninth consecutive year. Over the years, it has grown to become an anticipated and respected platform for showcasing and indentifying emerging talent. Auditions will take place over four weeks and we invite hopefuls to enter,” says Elouise Matthys, PR and Promotions Manager at GrandWest.

The competition is open to emerging jazz vocalists over the age of 18. Professional singers, referring to those already deriving an income from performing, are not permitted to enter the competition. Performers must register for the competition between19h00 and 20h00 at Jackson Hall on the day of their audition. Auditions are limited to 30 entrants per night. 

The participants will be accompanied by an accomplished band. The judges will focus on vocal technique, song interpretation, stage presence and audience response. The entrants are encouraged to bring their friends, family and fans to cheer and support them. On 1 September 2017, the top 24 contestants will be announced. They will compete in the quarter finals taking place on 6 and 13 September 2017.
For the first time, the competition will produce a show featuring top past and current GrandWest Open Mic Jazz singing competition contestants. The 90 minute show will be held from 6 to 8 October 2017. For more information on the competition, contact Morita Bester at GrandWest on 021 505 7526.
