“It’s in your hands”, so can you ‘give a can’?

Calling Corporate SA to support the annual #MandelaMosaic build at Canal Walk Shopping Centre

Cape Town, 6 July 2017 – International Nelson Mandela Day (18th July) came about when, on his 90th birthday, the late President uttered the words: “It’s in your hands now,” as he urged world leaders to make the world a better place.  While it is not a public holiday, it is a day for the public and Corporate South Africa to unite, if only for 67 minutes, to do good – for each other, animals, and the environment. Providing the ideal opportunity to do justice to Madiba’s legacy, Canal Walk Shopping Centre is once again staging its world renowned #MandelaMosaic building, charitable event.

In aid of the no fee LEAP Science and Maths schools, Canal Walk Shopping Centre, LEAP and their partners – Rhodes Food Group - are calling for donations of food cans and volunteers to help them create the super-sized likeness of the Father of our Nation.

Each tin of food that will be placed in the mapped out image, in the food court at the Centre, will be colour coded to make it easier for the teams of volunteers, in sessions of 67 minutes each, to create the masterpiece.  Entertaining everyone – visiting dignitaries, celebrities and sporting personalities, corporate citizens, and members of the public alike – will be a host of fun activities and performances throughout the fun day.

Having won an international award* for the 2016 rendition of the #MandelaMosaic, the team is now aiming to go further by collecting 20 400 cans of food to build this year’s 16m X 8m image, thus donating even more to LEAP and its designated community projects.   Monies raised from generous corporates and from ticket sales to Canal Walk’s annual theatre production in 2016, also contributed to the establishment of LEAP’s own on-site teacher-training institute in association with UNISA.  Practical training is carried out in the LEAP schools with the aim of growing a strong contingent of educators who can lead SA into the future.

Merlin Norman, Marketing Manager at Rhodes Food Group, the primary sponsor of the canned food for the Mandela Day Mosaic, commented: “We are committed to giving back and making a difference in our communities through the food that we produce, and through our partnership with Canal Walk Shopping Centre and LEAP schools, we are able to assist in providing a meal to children at school. We are therefore proud to participate again in the upcoming Mandela Day at Canal Walk by contributing over 20 000 cans of Rhodes Quality products to the Mandela Mosaic Project.”

A percentage of the proceeds from the staging of Peter Pan these school holidays, along with the bighearted financial gesture of R250 000 from the Hyprop Foundation and other keen corporate donors, will also be contributed to LEAP to continue the organisation’s endeavours.

Says Vanessa Herbst Marketing Manager at Canal Walk Shopping Centre: “Creating a space where we can collectively and publically engage in making a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves, is needed more today than ever before. We all need to remember and uphold the values of Nelson Mandela and Canal Walk would like to encourage as many people as possible to support this worthwhile and fun initiative.

Sessions on 18th July are: 09H3011H3013H30 and 15H30

* Canal Walk Shopping Centre received the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) Foundation European Community Support Award, for their ‘Mandela Day Mosaic’ campaign.  The prestigious award was announced at the Solal Awards ceremony, European Marketing Conference event held in Vienna, Austria on 8th June 2017.  The award was accompanied by a donation of $5,000 donation for the no-fee LEAP Science and Math Schools, (LEAP), beneficiary of the campaign.

About LEAP Science & Maths Schools

LEAP Science and Maths Schools work in some of the most economically and socially marginalised communities in South Africa. The vision of LEAP is to positively transform these communities through the meaningful education of children who live there.

Currently LEAP operates 6 no-fee schools in South Africa, two of which are in the Western Cape: LEAP 1 in Langa and LEAP 2 in Philippi which serves the communities of Gugulethu, Crossroads and Delft.  LEAP employs over 200 teachers and staff. Our current enrolment is 974 learners across the 6 schools.

LEAP’s specialised unit, the Global Teachers Institute (GTI), which runs the Future Leaders Programme, aims to recruit 10% of the learners from each matric class at each of the 6 campuses to train as teachers.   Over 55 teachers in training are currently enrolled in the programme.

LEAP also acts as an enabling hub for numerous additional community development programmes.  We require learners and teachers to actively participate in supporting a number of social development projects in their communities, an integral part of a learner’s curriculum. .  Find out more at:http://leapschool.org.za
