Ring in spring with Hurricane Thenjiwe

Ring in the start of spring with a hurricane of laughter at The Boardwalk. Standup comedienne Hurricane Thenjiwe ventures to Port Elizabeth for a whirlwind comedy showcase at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre on 1 September 2017.  This is will be the first time that this hilarious comedy mom unleashes her special brand of humour on The Bay.

She has recently completed a highly successful world tour which saw her cracking audiences’ ribs in countries such as Swaziland, Nigeria, England, Scotland and Canada. Unlike Dineo, who never reached South African shores, (perhaps she was too busy doing her hair and nails) this Hurricane promises to deliver floods of jokes. Her opening act will be local rising star Sqazolo. Tickets are available at The Boardwalk and at Computicket and are based on Blesser levels: Blesser level 1 tickets are R150; Blesser level 2 tickets are R200 and Blesser level 3 tickets cost R250.

Thenjiwe grew up in KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal and initially studied drama at what was then known as Natal Technikon in 1998. She eventually packed her bags and left for the US where she worked as an au pair for two years before moving to the UK a year later. She went there with the intention of staying for two years but is still there, with a husband, child and a law degree, more than 12 years later. However, she regularly travels to South Africa to entertain her local fans.

She landed in comedy quite haphazardly. She had just finished a good day in court and decided to celebrate. It so happened that the bar she and her colleagues went to was hosting a comedy and she was convinced to get onto the stage. As luck would have it, a talent scout in the crowd saw her perform and organised a few corporate gigs for her. She eventually entered the Funny Women Awards in the UK for fun and made it all the way to the finals. This is what launched her career and gave her an escape from her career in law.

She keeps her roots in the local comedy industry with her outrageously popular and funny videos which she uploads on Fridays to social media. Gagasi FM also plays her skits. Her material is pretty much based on relevant topics of the day.

“It is certainly a rare and special treat to have Hurricane Thenjiwe appearing on our stage. We urge comedy fans to be at the show because there is just no telling when the opportunity to see this vivacious comedienne live in Port Elizabeth will come around again,” says Siphokazi Ngombane, Public Relations & Promotions Manager at The Boardwalk.
