Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters’ Miss Universe farewell

Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has revealed two of the outfits she will be wearing when the 66th Miss Universe pageant takes place at The Axis in Las Vegas on Sunday, November 26.

She also showed off her official national gift, a stunning piece of jewellery made from gold and diamonds, called “The Daisies of Africa”.

Twenty-two-year-old Nel-Peters, a B.Comm graduate, believes she is fully prepared for Miss Universe: “My preparations started when I was crowned Miss South Africa 2017. Just as with the Miss South Africa platform, I understand the responsibility of being Miss Universe and the impact it has on millions of lives.”

Nel-Peters’ national costume, which she showed off at her farewell, has been designed by Malikah Hajee and Lloyd Kandlin and their team at The Costume Department while Anel Botha has designed a number of outfits including the finale gown.

Say Hajee and Kandlin: “We were approached by the Miss South Africa Organisation’s pageant coach and stylist Werner Wessels to create the Miss South Africa national costume. Wessels had a vision of what he thought would be most effective. We then took his idea a step further and created our version of the South African national flower, the protea, which is also the official Miss South Africa emblem. We looked at the elements of the flower and colours and recreated it in a costume form.”

Botha, who is responsible for the Miss Universe finale gown, says she was inspired by what the Miss Universe Pageant is synonymous with – sophistication and glamour in a celebration of young women who are confidently beautiful.

She says: "Demi-Lee's Miss Universe gown reflects her beauty in a million ways and it also shows off her strength and her beautiful physique. It is a gown that will be remembered!"

At her farewell, Demi-Leigh also showed off another of Anel’s outfits that she will be wearing during the course of the build-up in the US to the Miss Universe finale.

Nel-Peters will be taking a piece of South African jewellery, designed by Miss South Africa sponsors, Jack Friedman Jewellers with input from her, as the national gift to Miss Universe. It is inspired by Namaqualand daisies and the map of Africa and is made with diamonds and gold and includes the artistic technique of vitreous enamelling. A quote by the late Nelson Mandela is engraved on the underside of the piece.

Says Howard Fevrier, CEO of Jack Friedman Jewellers and the founder’s grandson: “We decided that the perfect national gift would showcase not only our precious natural resources, but the talented jewellery designers and craftmanship we have in South Africa. The piece of jewellery will be auctioned for charity to a discerning International audience and therefore needed to be a unique design, and of the highest standard in terms of skill and the complexity required to create it.”

“The Daisies of Africa” will be presented in a wooden box made from one the oak trees that was damaged during the devastating fires in Knysna, near Demi’s hometown of Sedgefield, in June this year.

Sun International and Cell C wished Nel-Peters the best of luck for the pageant: “We know that Demi is well prepared and will do South Africa proud. She has accumulated an impressive list of achievements since she was crowned Miss South Africa including her Unbreakable campaign; raising R650 000 for Knysna fire relief; being the ambassador for Cell C’s Take a Gild Child to Work® campaign and raising awareness for breast cancer.  She has also launched her Demi Jeans with Soviet Jeans and participated in the sought-after World Swimsuit Issue photoshoot.”

The 2018 Miss South Africa pageant will be staged next year by licence holders Sun International, in collaboration with Cell C.

7 years has passed since the release of The Automatic Shuffle and WONDERboom have made the wait worthwhile releasing their powerful new studio album Rising Sun! Rising Sun is released exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music TODAY - http://apple.co/2hdekVi
WONDERboom are extremely excited for the release of Rising Sun and will host an album launch party at The Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg on Saturday 4 NovemberThe rest of South Africa can see the band on tour in November and December as they hit the road for the Rising Sun Album Tour. All info here – https://www.facebook.com/WONDERboomBand/

Included in the tour is a trip to Ningbo in China from 1 to 3 December and it will be the band’s first visit to the country. WONDERboom will be performing at the Ningbo Cultural Festival, which is a festival hosting bands from 13 different countries on a competitive platform. Crowd votes determine the winning band/country, which will be announced on the 3rd of December. WONDERboom will be performing on the main Saturday night line-up with key International press and media covering the event.

Southern Light is also the brand new single from Rising Sun released to radio today and follows previous singles Great Escape and Ooh La La, both available on the brand new WONDERboom album.

The loss of drummer Garth McLeod in 2013 was a massive shock to the band. With time taken to grieve the loss and rework the future of WONDERboom, the band found a great new addition with Jonathan Bell stepping in on drums. The Rock & Roll machine was in motion again and it's been a cathartic and introspective journey since for the band. Die-hard fans can’t deny the sheer magical force that WONDERboom has become again. The live show is still pure power and energy!

ing Sun captures this story in a dynamic way. The title track suggests what WONDERboom as a band feel - a new dawn. A revival of what was once regarded as an electric, live and very stimulating music experience, is here!

Cito explains why it took 7 years for this album to come out, saying “It took us a while to build up our creative momentum when Garth passed away and Jono stepped in. We felt like we were pretty much starting all over again and had to nurture our live chemistry with this new being. Having said that, the delay wasn’t calculated; it just was. Once we got our performance thing rocking again, the songs started to come. Martin and I started spending about 3 -4 days a week, writing songs and experimenting. Then, workshopping the songs with Wade and Jono, which gave the songs another killer dimension. We played all of these songs live to get the proper feedback we needed to tweak them. So, one and a half years after we started the process, we got to the point where we are happy with what we’ve got and proud to release.”

Rising Sun is a triumphant release from WONDERboom and is packed with powerful new songs. Singles such as Great Escape and Ooh La La have already been embraced with loving arms by fans and the South African music industry alike. Brand new single Southern Light is released today and other gems on the album include album opener Humans and potential singles HellPraying Mantis, In Place Of Something, and Shark Bite.

WONDERboom are so excited for fans to hear this album! “For the first time EVER, we took our time and were extremely meticulous with the whole production process. Sometimes we’d re-record, other times we’d just scrap, but every song on Rising Sun is meant to be there and pretty much the cream of the crop. First album with Jono on drums. I think fans will get a sense of ‘Damn, you worked hard on this record!’ The attention to detail, the energy, the musicality, the soul… It’s all in there. We had a motto for the album and that was ‘GO THERE!’ No half-arsed attempts at any song. It’s heavy, it’s beautiful, it’s epic,” comments Cito.

WONDERboom have cemented their legendary status. 21 Years in the industry, 8 albums released, headlined many major SA festivals, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award & People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands & came SECOND WORLDWIDE! There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Green Fever, Africa, Shadows, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive, Best Side, On The Radio, and Karaoke Bar.

Rising Sun adds to this impressive list as we salute SA’s favourite Rock band, WONDERboom.

Amazon’s Fall 2017 Half-Hour Pilot Season
On November 10, Amazon will debut three new half-hour pilots as part of its Pilot program. Amazon’s Pilot program has helped make some of the most critically-acclaimed and popular series to date.

Amazon’s upcoming half-hour pilots include:

  • The Climb: From creator and star Diarra Kilpatrick
(American Koko, The Last O.G.) and The Mark Gordon Company comes a comedy about the new American Dream set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Detroit. The Climb follows an office assistant who seeks an extraordinary life through internet fame, with her best friend always in tow. Chris Robinson (The New Edition StoryStar) directed the pilot and Christina Lee (Search PartyWet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) served as showrunner on the pilot episode.
  • Love You More: Love You More stars New York City cabaret sensation Bridget Everett (Patti Cake$) as Karen Best, with Bobcat Goldthwait (God Bless America) directing and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City, The Comeback, 2 Broke Girls) showrunning.  Karen Best is a big girl with a big personality and a big love of Chardonnay, which occasionally, causes her to make some big mistakes with men. But the biggest thing about Karen is her big heart, which she uses to excel at her job as a counselor at an independent living residence for young adults with Down syndrome. And sometimes, Karen’s need to stand up for all the little people in life manifests into a fantasy rock music number, where we discover she also has a big and beautiful voice. Love You More is from MPK Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and Amazon Studios.
  • Sea Oak: Sea Oak is a genre bending comedy from renowned author and creator George Saunders (Lincoln in the Bardo), starring Emmy-winner Glenn Close (Damages, The Wife), directed by Golden Globe-winner Hiro Murai (Atlanta) and executive produced by Jonathan Krauss through his Affiliated Pictures banner.  Murai will also serve as an executive producer as well as Evan Dunsky (Nurse Jackie).  Lael Smith and Keir McFarlane serve as co-executive producers.  Aunt Bernie, a working-class woman in a Rust Belt city (meek, unmarried, no kids) dies tragically in a home invasion. Compelled by sheer force of dissatisfaction, she comes back from the dead full of rage, determined to get the life she never had.  She proceeds to inflict a range of demands on what’s left of her nuclear family (a quasi-stripper nephew and two feckless nieces), who live in a low-end subsidized hellhole of a housing complex called Sea Oak.  Sea Oak is from Amazon Studios.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
On November 29The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be available on Prime Video. The series, written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and executive producer Daniel Palladino (Family Guy), stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted—the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent—one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy…a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also stars Golden Globe winner and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s father Abe Weissman, Alex Borstein (Family Guy) as Susie Myerson, Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband Joel Maisel and Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men) as Midge’s mother Rose Weissman.

SHE CAN’T ESCAPE HER TRADITION, OR HER HEART

ZULU WEDDING is the much anticipated romantic-comedy from producer/director, Lineo Sekeleoane. It’s a first for South Africa to have a black female producer and director, who also created the concept for the film. Unashamedly romantic, glamorous and hilarious all at the same time, the film pays loving tribute to the richness of African culture. It acknowledges the, sometimes schizophrenic, reality of many urban South Africans who live sophisticated modern lives which are nonetheless shaped by their family cultures, traditions and expectations.  The film is set to open at cinemas nationwide on 23 February 2018.

Feisty choreographer, LOU “LUNGILE” (Nondumiso Tembe), will do anything to avoid falling in love. Even more to avoid going home to South Africa, where she’s traditionally engaged to a king. However, when she meets her soulmate TEX (Darrin Dewitt Henson) she is forced to confront the tradition she’s been running away from since the death of her parents, when she turned 18, and the ancestral debt they left her. She hatches a plan to confront the King and convince him to forget about her, but when she prevails upon handsome royal advisor ZULU (Pallance Dladla), to help her get into the Royal Compound, he proves to be a dangerously seductive charmer, one who seems to represent all the best aspects of her background.

Tex, his wise-cracking best friend NATE (Carl Payne), Lou’s eccentric traffic officer sister MABO (Makgano Mambolo), and her tell-it-like-it-is alcoholic best friend SAM (Bubu Mazibuko), set off to ‘the rurals’ to rescue her while the shifty UNCLE PHINEAS (Jerry Phele), his sexy wife YVONNE (Kelly Khumalo) and “The Basotho 10,” (lead by TKZee Family’s Gwyza) stay behind. The stage is set for hilarity, hi-jinks and heartbreak.

According to Sekeleoane, the film was 10 years in the making. “The idea started in the emergency room of a hospital as I formulated a joke scenario for an actress friend of mine. She liked the scenario and the character, an insane traffic cop by the name of MABO who never takes off her uniform. As I started to shape that character’s world, the focus of the narrative shifted to her sister, LOU, and ZULU WEDDING was born,”  Sekeleoane. “MABO remains an important character though, and is brilliantly brought to life by Makgano Mamabolo. The entire cast was amazing. After doing castings in New York, Los Angeles and Johannesburg and seeing hundreds of people over several years, I can truly say that we were blessed. Every person brought something special to the project,” she adds.

With an effervescent screenplay by Julie Hall and stunning cinematography by award-winning Lance Gewer of Tsotsi-fame, ZULU WEDDING promises a lush, playful, escapist experience which should appeal to fans of films like Happiness is a Four-letter Word and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The star-studded cast includes Nondumiso Tembe (True Blood, King Kong The Musical); Darrin Dewitt-Henson (Soul Food, Lincoln Heights, Stomp The Yard); Pallance Dladla (Tempy Pushas, Isibaya, Hard To Get); the hilarious Carl Payne (Martin, The Cosby Show); Bubu Mazibuko; Kelly Khumalo; Lorcia Cooper; S’thandiwe Kgoroge; Treasure Tshabalala; Kole Omotoso and Makgano Mamabolo, with cameo appearances from DJ Tira; Carolyn Steyn and many of South Africa’s best-loved celebrities.
