Making her mark: Tanya Harvey of Richmark Holdings awarded the Stop Sign award for her contribution to the 2017 SheEO SleepOut™

When Richmark Holdings sets out to Make a Difference then nothing can stand in the way. This August, the Head of Marketing and Events at Richmark Holdings, Tanya Harvey, took part in the SheEO SleepOut, which was the 2017 Special Chapter of the CEO SleepOut. In true Richmark style, Harvey rose to the challenge of raising as much money as possible for the beneficiary of the sleepout, Doors of Hope, a shelter for vulnerable and abandoned children. Her efforts were rewarded when she was nominated as the Leading Agent of Change for the 2017 SheEO SleepOut. On Tuesday the 5th of December, at a ceremony including The Philanthropic Collection representatives and her colleagues and peers, Harvey was presented with the prestigious Stop Sign Award in recognition of her contribution to the 2017 event and the difference she has made in the lives of the abandoned children that Doors of Hope works with.

The CEO Sleepout is a global humanitarian effort that encourages business leaders and influential people to experience the difficulties of spending a winters night sleeping outdoors, so that they can empathise with the less fortunate who endure this on a daily basis. Each sleepout event asks participants to pledge money and to raise additional funds that can be donated to a worthy cause. South Africa has been running the CEO Sleepout with great success for several years and in 2017, the ante was upped with a special event aimed at inspirational South African women: The SheEO SleepOut.

Having participated in the 2016 sleepout, founder of Richmark Holdings and well-known South African philanthropist Gavin Varejes immediately encouraged Harvey to enter. He says, Tanya is an incredible force at Richmark, a dynamic and intelligent woman who accomplishes anything that she sets her mind to. I knew that she would do us proud at the sleepout and she has, having pulled out all the stops to become the leading fundraiser of the event. Well done, Tanya, we are so impressed!

Both Varejes and Harvey have reiterated what an impact the sleepout experience has made on them. As Harvey notes, As someone who has the opportunity to go out and make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate, this experience was a big reminder to constantly strive to make a difference. Thank you to Gavin Varejes and Richmark Holdings for the nomination and the support and thank you to The Philanthropic Collection for hosting this amazing and worthy event.

Gallo Record Company is excited to announce the release of Jeremy Loops’ brand-new single Waves on Friday 8 December.

Waves is the lead single from the upcoming 2nd studio album which is due for release 16 March 2018. It’s the first release on Jeremy’s independent label, licensed exclusively to Gallo and sets the tone for the theme around his album.

Jeremy is excited to release brand new music to his fans. “I can't wait for people to hear this song. I've never worked so hard on anything in my life, and though tough, it's come together beautifully. And the best part is I know what’s coming next. This Is Just the tip of the iceberg.”

In late 2016, Loops began writing his follow up album, collaborating along the way with noted songwriters like Jake Gosling (James Bay, Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes). Then in 2017, Loops went into studio with Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, Bastille) to record and produce his follow up album. Waves, the first single from the currently untitled project, is a woozy summer song, with Loops’ signature guitar licks, vocal turns, and ear for melody over world class contemporary production.

WONDERboom Wins Gold For South Africa In China!

Rising Sun album out now across all digital platforms -

WONDERboom competed against 14 other countries at the 'Silk Road Indie Music Festival' in Chengdu, China and won top award. The international music competition, which took place this past weekend from 1 - 3 December, is an initiative to introduce global music to Chinese audiences, alongside top Chinese performers. Gold went to South Africa’s WONDERboom and Silver and Bronze awards were won by countries Georgia and Lithuania respectively.

The event was attended by key international media, including Billboard Magazine who covered the festival and performances were recorded for broadcast on Chinese TV. This is the first time WONDERboom has gone to China and the band couldn't have asked for a better debut. Already in discussion is the prospect of returning to the country with dates in other major Chinese cities.

Frontman Cito is ecstatic over the win! "We are over the moon with elation and cannot believe our fortune. China and its people have completely blown our minds. We look forward to returning and rocking their beautiful crowds."

How did this all come about for WONDERboom? The Maritime Silk Road Music Festival and The Maritime Silk Road Music Industry Platform are developing music trade ties between China and international countries in music production, artist talent development, music education, technology innovation, concert performances and music content sales. Well-known international music consultant and promoter, Adrian Skirrowis the South African representative and is very happy with the result!

“Only 3 hours before the finals, WONDERboom and other competitors were announced as one of the 6 acts competing for top honors during the Sunday night finals. What made the win even more special, was the band’s unenviable task of competing for the big prize last and after some very strong performances beforehand. From the minute WONDERboom hit the stage and struck their first chord, it was clear they meant business with their trademark high energy show and pop flavoured Afro punk attitude, which the audience and judges undoubtedly loved. WONDERboom’s achievement is being received with fantastic response and enthusiasm here in China and discussions are underway to get them back for a Chinese tour in 2018. I personally cannot wait to see one of the very best live bands around spread their unique sound and live performance prowess to new fans here!” comments Skirrow.

The Festival and Platform are under the official authority of China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and has officially begun operations.  It was established at a conference and pre-launch festival in Ningbo, China in November 2016, and more recently an international music industry forum during April 2017. The Festival and Platform are now rapidly expanding throughout China.

In November 2016, artists from eight countries were invited to perform at the Ningbo Maritime Silk Road International Music Festival.  The music festival successfully introduced and marketed international artists to Chinese audiences and promoted Chinese pop artists to world markets. For 2017, 14 international performing artists, along with Chinese pop artists competed for most popular international act honour, across three days of music and celebrations.

Celebrate the win with WONDERboom as they continue their Rising Sun album tour this weekend:

WONDERboom ‘Rising Sun’ album tour:

24 December – Knysna Yacht Club, Knysna (unplugged)
25 December – Music Kitchen, Port Elizabeth (unplugged)
26 December – Vinyl On Main, Knysna
27 December – Gecko Bar, Hermanus
28 December – Brass Bell, Cape Town
29 December – Quay Four, Cape Town
30 December – Bertie’s Mooring, Gordon’s Bay
31 December – Rumours Rock City, Johannesburg

Rising Sun is a triumphant release from WONDERboom and is packed with 11 powerful songs. Album opener Humans launches the album with that distorted guitar-riff driven, kick drum stomping, dirty Rock & Roll sounding, fist-pumping anthem WONDERboom delivers so well. Southern Light is the current single from Rising Sun receiving love across SA radio, and with previous singles Great Escape and Ooh La La already fan favourites, these three singles are just a taste of what Rising Sun holds. The rest of the album is just pure magic listening to singles such as HellPraying Mantis, In Place Of Something, and Shark Bite.

WONDERboom are so excited for fans to hear this album! “For the first time EVER, we took our time and were extremely meticulous with the whole production process. Sometimes we’d re-record, other times we’d just scrap, but every song on Rising Sun is meant to be there and pretty much the cream of the crop. First album with Jono on drums. I think fans will get a sense of ‘Damn, you worked hard on this record!’ The attention to detail, the energy, the musicality, the soul… It’s all in there. We had a motto for the album and that was ‘GO THERE!’ No half-arsed attempts at any song. It’s heavy, it’s beautiful, it’s epic,” comments Cito.

WONDERboom have cemented their legendary status. 21 Years in the industry, 8 albums released, headlined many major SA festivals, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award & People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands & came SECOND WORLDWIDE! There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Green Fever, Africa, Shadows, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive, Best Side, On The Radio, and Karaoke Bar.

Rising Sun adds to this impressive list as we salute SA’s favourite Rock band, WONDERboom.

If you think you know WONDERboom and you have your favourite song from watching one of SA’s most iconic Rock bands grow from strength to strength over the past 21 years, but you haven’t heard Rising Sun, you’re in for an amazing surprise. Your favourite song is on this album.

Introducing Luke Davidson: Breaking The Musical Mould

[Pictured: Luke Davidson]
[Photographer credit: August Photography @AugustPhotoSA]

South African-born Luke Davidson drops his first two singles to radio this week, releasing Million Years and The Lover as a debut musical spectrum.

Luke Davidson is unlike most songwriters. The music industry has seen countless artists launch their recording careers in their late teens and early twenties, fuelling the idea that you need to be young to be successful. Davidson breaks this mould and takes the leap in his thirties. Not unheard of though as the likes of Leonard Cohen, Bill Withers, and Debbie Harry (from Blondie) all launched their careers in their thirties. This was never a factor for Davidson who instead waited till he was ready, and it shows in his singles Million Years and The Lover.

Listen to ‘Million Years’ –
Listen to ‘The Lover’ –

There’s a clear diversity between the two singles which makes for an interesting introduction to Davidson. Why the different sounds? Davidson explains, saying Million Years is more a true depiction of where my music has come from. It's truer to the roots of my musical indie rock background. When I’m sitting on my couch at home and playing a few tunes on the guitar, Million Years is the kind of flavour that is created. This is a melodic indie rock song with a hint of Twenty One Pilots energy coming through. When I sat down with the amazing producer Francois de Klerk (who’s worked with the likes of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel) our creative expressions went a little wild creating something completely different to what we normally do, an EDM contemporary deep house track. Listening to TiMO ODV and The Weeknd, we thought ‘let’s create something of our own in this genre’, and so we did and here we have it - The Lover

Delving deeper into each song and first looking at Million Years as the track that is the most representative of Davidson’s writing, the theme is also very relevant to the launch of his recording career. Million Years I wrote as a conversation with myself, my inner teacher. I have moments of self-doubt and disappointment, sometimes it’s about the feeling that I can’t reach the expectations I set out for myself. As the lyrics depict, what if in a million years I might not reach the personal state I expect of myself to reach, would you still love me and would I still be able to love myself? It’s a song depicting a journey through my individual inner challenges. The internal conversations I find myself discussing in an attempt to move forward. I ask myself will it be ok if I don’t make it, and if I’m just here as I am, or will I still love myself and will you have the heart to love me too?” and Davidson’s lyrics and vocal delivery beautifully carries the feel of this desperation and worry.

The Lover is a complete 180 from Million Years and explores a more playful side to Davidson. “I wrote this with the intention in mind that in a dance/club environment the presence of fun, love, the hunt, sexual attraction, lust, and coolness play a very big role in having a good night out. This song is intended for those that wish to feel something unique and special while living in this jungle world of desire that through this energetic dance track we can together reach for that enlightened space of existence. Something of substance, real, unselfish, something special, not of ourselves.”

Davidson started developing his musical skills very early in life, writing his first song at age 11 with the help of his mother and father. Thereafter he learned how to play the piano and guitar in his teens and very quickly started composing his own songs. Like all aspiring musicians, he started playing in school bands and enjoying camp fire guitar sessions with friends. Soon the passion grew into a desire to entertain and express an array of meaningful moments in music. His twenties were filled with pub gigs during which he was selected for the Cape Town RocksCD compilation and the Barleycorn singer songwriter’s competition final, but he continued to stay a musician under the radar.

It’s only in his thirties that Davidson decided to take his music to producers and invest some time in his songs with international industry professionals. Listening to the few tracks Davidson has released, his songs have an influence of current indie rock mixed with an EDM flare. His 90’s rock roots have integrated well with the current music flavour and is innovative in its style and production.

This is just the beginning for Luke Davidson. He is ready for the world to hear his music and there’s a lot more to look forward to.
